{"id":3681783,"date":"2023-10-12T17:57:12","date_gmt":"2023-10-12T17:57:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/rasmus.com\/auction\/?p=3681783"},"modified":"2023-10-12T17:57:13","modified_gmt":"2023-10-12T17:57:13","slug":"are-online-auctions-worth-it","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rasmus.com\/auction\/are-online-auctions-worth-it\/","title":{"rendered":"<strong>Are Online Auctions Worth It?<\/strong>"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>I have been around the auction business ever since I met my husband, over 30 years ago.\u00a0 I\u2019ve been to live auctions, held benefit auctions, both silent &amp; live, and seen the industry go from steamy fair grounds\u2019 shelters and warehouses, to exclusively online.\u00a0If there has ever been an industry to reinvent themselves with time and technology, the auction industry is it!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Prep for the Auction<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It was not until I saw it from the seller side, did I realize how powerful online auctions can be. We had collected stuff\u2026.like a lot of stuff our entire lives.\u00a0 And then, we decided to downsize. \u00a0 Everything!\u00a0 We had 30+ years of stuff and neither of us like to throw anything away. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since we had lived the \u201cauction life\u201d it just made sense to sell our items through an online auction.\u00a0 Now, I\u2019m not going to lie, it was a lot of work.\u00a0 Going through our entire house, photographing items, labeling them, describing them, piece-by-piece.\u00a0Add in the sentimental value to said items\u2026it was time to have some help.\u00a0 So, we added in a college student to help with the process.\u00a0 She, unattached to the stuff, made much quicker progress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Auction Process<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Fast forward &#8211; items are in the system via an app on our phone, and ready to go LIVE on the internet.\u00a0 And people wanted OUR stuff! Everything from a coin collection, artwork, furniture to goofy stuff like paper goods &amp; themed decorations.\u00a0 Everything we listed, we sold!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Everything went &#8211; regardless of how value-less we might have thought it to be, it sold.&nbsp; And, the best part\u2026people picked it up!&nbsp; We did not have to ship, we did not have to move it, we just let the people that purchased our stuff, pick it up &amp; take it home with them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Pros &amp; Cons to an Online Auction<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Obviously, there are pros and cons to anything you do but here are a few to consider:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Pros<\/strong> &#8211; Everything Sold<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Items were picked up on location, so no moving, storing, shipping, etc<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The auction company will advertise the sale and handle all of the money collection<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can see what\u2019s happening every step of the way<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You don\u2019t see the haggling (think of a yardsale with your favorite things and someone is trying to barter with you over $2)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Cons<\/strong> &#8211; It is a lot of work on the front end if you\u2019re doing the inventory yourself. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You are opening your whole life up to the internet (weird feeling but safe, your location is not revealed until needed)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can see what\u2019s happening every step of the way!&nbsp; As you can imagine, most of the action happens in the last few minutes so don\u2019t be discouraged if no one is bidding on your stuff right away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Our Auction Experience<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>All in all, we were thrilled with the online auction experience.\u00a0 So much so, we ended up having 3 separate auctions because there was so much stuff!\u00a0And, guess what?\u00a0 The stuff now has new owners!\u00a0 Think of it like recycling.\u00a0 Taking our old, no-longer-needed stuff and getting into the hands so someone who will use it and love it.\u00a0And, in return, we made money.\u00a0A lot of money!\u00a0More money that we ever would have made with a yard sale, garage sale, market places or online listings.\u00a0And, all at once (well, over 3 sales)!
